Automation is great, the more you automate, the less you need to do but don’t let it make you complacent.
keep an eye on your automated processes or you will probably find problems building up in the background.
Tenuous link but I keep marine fish and corals, which means a lot of water testing, so I automated whatever I could.
When I was doing the testing manually and adjusting parameters as part of a routine I had less issues than when I automated the testing.
There was nothing wrong with the automation, the problem was with me. I automated too much, got swamped with notifications (which then got ignored) and generally relied too heavily on the tech to deal with the issues.
The tech didn’t and obviously, problems built up in the background leaving me with an ugly tank to fix.
Jira and tools like it are very similar. They are a great way to store work items and track progress.
Done right a jira project should enable anyone to understand what you are doing, how you are doing it and your progress.
If we modify and automate too much though, problems will occur, just like in my tank.
There is nothing wrong with jira (or any other tool), the problem is the way that we use/abuse them.
🔸 Keep things simple
🔸 Automate to save you time, not to remove your involvement
🔸 Minimise notifications where possible
🔸 Keep an eye on things
